Sports Promotion

Within its sports promotion programme Germany supports the development of sport in Jamaica by sending experts, making donations of sport material and arranging for training courses for coaches at sport schools and universities in Germany.

Within this framework the German Embassy has sponsored chess sets to the total value of one thousand two hundred Euros (135,000.00 Jamaican Dollars) to various schools in Kingston. Chess is richly endorsed in German society, even before Germany staged the 2008 Chess Olympiad in Dresden. Indeed it is a great sport that helps children to develop intellectual skills, to keep them calm and concentrated in the game and in life.

On 18 January 2012 Ambassador Beck handed over some of the donated chess sets to Kingston College’s Vice Principal Mrs. Marguerita Hall. Mr. Wilkinson, chairman of the “Magnificent Chess Foundation”, congratulated Germany on winning the European Team Chess Championships in November 2011. The “Magnificent Chess Foundation” introduces chess to Jamaican students at no cost and with the motto “building a nation of thinkers”.
